Link Condom, learn how to use your link juice properly

Post by shukla7789 »

Do you like giving things away to strangers who have more than you? Think carefully about your answer, because if your website has links to your social networks (which is very likely) you are giving link juice to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. But don't worry, you don't have to delete those links, you can stop the bleeding by using a peculiar technique that in the English-speaking world is known as a link condom.

What is link condom
Link means link and condom means condom. So link condom would be putting a condom on a link so that link juice doesn't pass to the person you don't want. Clever metaphor, right?

Actually, creating a link condom is as simple as adding the no follow attribute to a link. As you may already know, the rel = nofollow tag is used to indicate to search engines that a link should not band database the positioning of the link's target. This achieves two things:

Don't waste link juice unnecessarily
Link safely to all types of pages (because if you follow a website with a bad reputation, your positioning may be affected)
Just like the condom, it prevents pregnancy and protects against sexually transmitted diseases.

Update: Obfuscating links, the new link condom alternative
The link condom used to work like a charm, but Google didn't seem to like it very much and has recently decided to put an end to it. The explanation is not clear, but it seems that the Mountain View giant does not look kindly on you artificially redistributing the link juice on your page.

To understand the change, I will give an example of how things were before and how they are now.

In the menu of the website, everyone uses the nofollow attribute on the link to the Contact page. It makes sense, because it is not a positionable page. So if the menu has 5 tabs, when you disable the contact tab, the link juice is distributed among the remaining 4. If you have to distribute it among fewer people, you will always touch more of each one.

But Google considers this to be a selfish practice, so it has decided that if the menu has five links, the link juice is distributed among all five. However, if one of the links has the nofollow attribute, the part of the link juice that would correspond to it is not redistributed, but is lost.
