New law restricts the use of cell phones in public and private schools across the country. The measure, determined by Federal Law 15,100, enacted in January 2025, limits the use of portable electronic devices both in classrooms and during breaks.
However, the law allows the educational use of the devices, as long as it is authorized by teachers. The objective of the new legislation is to protect children and adolescents from the negative impacts of excessive screen time on their mental, physical and psychological health, as highlighted by the Ministry of Education ( MEC ).
