The 2018 research revealed that human capital faced the greatest obstacles in the digital transformation journey, as many organizations failed to engage their employees. However, today, a growing number of organizations are able to engage them in their digital initiatives. Despite progress, less than half of organizations are investing in building soft skills such as emotional intelligence , adaptability , and collaboration . Capgemini's research also found that culture is one of the main barriers to successful digital transformation: for example, many organizations lack a corporate culture where new ideas and experimentation are valued.

Accelerating investments in sustainability is essential to foster digital transformation.
The report highlights that while organizations need to pay shop attention to a range of factors such as customer experience, operations and business technology, they also need to consider sustainability and their overall mission, a crucial factor for customers and employees.
Consumers are increasingly concerned about their environmental footprint and the impact of climate change and want to make a difference through their actions, with most agreeing that companies have a more important role in society that goes beyond their individual interests. [1] Capgemini's research also highlighted that just under half of organizations are currently accelerating their investments, projects and commitments towards sustainability .

To further advance their digital transformation journey , the report recommends that organizations reinvent the employee experience , leveraging a fluid workforce and ensuring employees have social contracts aligned with the needs of the digital age . Furthermore, they need to build robust data and platform capabilities, scale new business and engagement models, and embed purpose and sustainability within the business, making them part of the corporate culture and considering technology from both a digital transformation and sustainability perspective .
