Examples of MVPs

Post by mstakh.i.mom.i »

Two notable examples of the success of MVPs in practice are Dropbox and Airbnb. These companies have not only evolved their business models by applying the MVP approach, they have also shown that agility and flexibility are essential success factors in today's economy.

Dropbox
Dropbox founder Drew Houston had trouble finding funding for his cloud yahoo email list storage idea (2007). He decided to create a minimum viable product (MVP) with no real features to test market demand. The MVP consists of a homemade explainer video with paper figures that illustrates the value of Dropbox. Interested parties can pay a fee to be put on a waiting list for the non-existent product. After the explainer video was released, Dropbox registrations increased from 5,000 to 75,000. In the following years, Dropbox was made available to a wider user base and equipped with additional features. Today, Dropbox is a major player in the cloud storage industry, valued at over $8 billion.

Airbnb
Brian Chesky and Joe Gebbia had an idea and a business plan, but no start-up capital. As the MVP of their later company Airbnb, they made their own apartment available and rented out rooms during a local event. The feedback from the tenants was used to improve the official platform.
The positive feedback and the simplicity of the process inspired them to internationalize their concept.
Today, Airbnb offers more than seven million overnight stays worldwide in 62 languages and over 220 countries. The company generates annual revenue of around 3 billion US dollars.
