Finding broken internal and external links in a website audit is very common and it is something that has a simple solution: you just have to invest hours of work to make it perfect.

This is a personal opinion:
Crawl depth: Google once said that if you hide something in your domain, why should it show this URL in its results? It is not just about having the correct internal linking, you have to look at the internal link densities very carefully.
Nofollow attributes: I am almost against using this attribute in many projects, if there is a link in one of my projects, why should Google not crawl it? If there is a link, let it follow it and otherwise, let it not be linked.
Errors in sitemaps: errors in linking are not only on the web, reviewing sitemaps is essential to avoid 301 or 404. Especially after a migration or on websites with many URLs.
Anchor text of links: this is another element to take into account in SEO. It is not just what you link, it is also important to define with what concept you do it.
Many projects insist on obtaining links from other websites to their own in an almost automated way without first having everything perfect onpage.
One more thing, we always talk about links between URLs, but we cannot forget that there are many sectors, such as the fashion industry, that live off of image or video traffic. If we have these wrong links on our website, it will be difficult for Google to place these elements in its results.
